Anti-Base Movement Organizations
In an estimated 900 sites around the world, U.S. bases have led to evictions, environmental destruction, and the undermining of democracy.
An “arc of solidarity” is developing in opposition. The Philippines set an example in 1992, when the country booted out the U.S. Then, after years of protest in Vieques, Puerto Rico, the U.S. was evicted in 2009. Anti-bases protests have taken place in Japan since the U.S. Occupation. More recently, after a U.S. military helicopter crashed in Okinawa in August 13, 2004, the largest anti-U.S. rally in nearly a decade demanded that the troops go home. Meanwhile, at the nearby fishing village of Henoko, community members have staged a continuous sit-in for years against the planned destruction of Oura Bay, the habitat of the Okinawa dugong and other endangered species, to make way for U.S. military base expansion.
As local struggles continue worldwide, global solidarity and resistance is strengthening.
